Angelina Goertzen, a 30-year-old WestJet flight attendant and newly published author of a children’s book, was called from the audience to ‘Contestants’ Row’ by host Drew Carey, made it all the way to Showcase Showdown and then won the grand prize.
She won the showdown, a package that included a boat and a trip to Mexico, when she guessed the value at $23,000 and the actual price was $25,130.
Goertzen will take the trip to Mexico, but is taking a cash reward of just over $20,000 because the boat and other smaller prizes can’t be shipped.
“I’m very happy about that. I didn’t know what I was going to do with the boat — I live in an apartment and don’t have a cottage,” she said.
Goertzen plans to use the winnings for a down payment on a condo in Winnipeg.
But prize or not, the chance to play and meet Carey was a thrill in itself.
“Even if they sent me $20, the experience is worth it enough.”
It appears that CBS boss Les Moonves wasn’t joking when he said that CBS was willing to talk to streaming VoD companies, as long as the price was right: relatively minor VoD company Boxee has announced that it will start selling individual episodes of CBS shows later this year.
The announcement was made at CES, and marks the first content deal between Boxee and a television network. On the company blog, a statement said,
“We have signed an agreement with CBS that will give Boxee users the ability to purchase full episodes from CBS starting later this year. We are excited about the opportunity to work with a major network on offering premium content to Boxee users, as well as create new revenue opportunities for both sides. As part of the deal, users will have the ability to purchase hit CBS television shows both current (The New Hawaii Five-O) and old (hello MacGyver!).”
For those of you who don’t know, Boxee is “is a cross-platform freeware HTPC (Home Theater PC) software application with a 10-foot user interface and social networking features designed for the living-room TV.” Essentially a mini computer that can take downloaded programs and send them to your TV so you can kick back and watch them– whenever you want to watch them!
A question the blog has been asked numerous times.
I’ll let a press release from the man himself earlier this season tell the story.
I am now able to confirm to you that I will not be returning to The Price is Right for season 39.
I have been given the “OK” from the show’s executive producer Mike Richards and Fremantle executive Jen Mullen to inform you as to their plans for my now vacated position.
Mike and Jen have told me that they will be holding on-air auditions to fill the announcer position with… an improv comic. Yep, you heard right.
Mike explained to me that he loves having the “house bands” and “live performers” all the time on TPIR and that he hopes to make it more of a “variety show within a game show”. He believes that having a comedian at the announcer’s position from now on will enhance this new change in direction.
I wish them the best of luck with season 39 and beyond. I really do. I don’t want Drew’s new “love” to go sour for any reason. Hosting that show brings Drew (and many other people) a lot of joy.
Let me also cut down on internet speculation by saying that Drew Carey had nothing to do with this “change in direction”. Drew has been my biggest champion. He and I will remain friends forever regardless of what happens to The Price is Right.
You can check him out on Facebook for up-to-the-minute updates!
Per ABC.com’s 20/20 page, Drew Carey is expected to appear on the show Friday night (3/13/09). He will team up with John Stossel Reason TV to get real about government in a segment known as “Bailouts and Bull.”

A couple weeks back we mentioned that it seemed to sound like Bob Barker was going to be hyping his new book on The Price is Right. From Golden-Road.net via Ken Crane:
I heard from some friends that still work 33 that Barker will be appearing on Price on Monday, March 2nd. I unfortunately cannot reveal my sources because everyone there is quite scared for their jobs. I know of several co-workers who were laid off in recent weeks, and I understand that the mood around the studio is very glum. I can’t imagine what it’s like with a new director coming in.
I just figured all of you fans would want to know in case you want to go to the taping that day.
The tape date supposedly corresponds with an April 6th airing, which is the day Barker’s book debuts.
According to a Ludia press release announcing an agreement with online game property WildTangent, The Price is Right 2 is listed as one of their upcoming casual game releases for 2009.
Let’s hope it’s true!
On page 7, Bob Barker’s new book, “Priceless Memories” is discussed, with this in a sidebar regarding promotion.
